iCloud Drive vs Google Drive vs OneDrive

Choose between Apple, Google, and Microsoft ecosystems without confusing device optimization, sync, and backup.

The most visible difference is ecosystem integration, but the important operational distinction is where the authoritative item lives and how a local placeholder behaves. Device storage optimization can remove a local body while preserving the cloud item, and a synced deletion can remove the item everywhere without behaving like an independent backup.

Map each content type to an owner: working documents, device photos, collaborative files, and archives. Test offline access, export, external sharing, file recovery, and a new-device restore. Confirm whether the library depends on application-specific data that will not survive as ordinary folders and files.

A practical checklist

  1. 1List Apple-, Google-, and Microsoft-specific applications used by the library.
  2. 2Identify which cloud item is authoritative and which local entries are placeholders.
  3. 3Test offline access, sharing, export, previous versions, and a second device.
  4. 4Create an independent backup outside the active sync relationship.
  5. 5Review the setup after device changes, plan changes, or major migrations.

Understand the situation

Compare the workflow, not just the advertised storage allowance. Account ecosystem, desktop behavior, sharing rules, recovery windows, upload constraints, portability, and who owns shared data can matter more than a headline capacity number.

Use a controlled workflow

Treat plan names, prices, quotas, and feature availability as time- and region-sensitive. Verify the provider's current terms before buying or migrating, and test representative large files, native documents, permissions, links, and version history before committing the full library.

Make the final decision

Use the ecosystem that matches the primary devices and applications, then deliberately separate synchronization from backup. Retain a periodic copy outside the synchronized namespace and verify it without signing in to the primary provider.

A migration commonly creates temporary exports and repeated copies. ClearCopies can later identify supported byte-identical files in OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox, but it does not decide which provider is best or treat converted native documents as exact duplicates.

Limits and risks to check

  • Optimized local storage is not the same as a second complete copy.
  • Synced deletion or corruption may propagate to connected devices.
  • Application libraries can contain relationships that folders do not preserve.
  • Switching ecosystems can convert formats or lose sharing and history.

Frequently asked questions

Does cloud sync count as a backup?

It provides useful redundancy and recovery features, but it shares failure modes with the active library. Important data still needs an independent copy with tested restore behavior.

Why is my device storage lower than cloud storage?

Cloud services can keep local placeholders or optimized versions while full content remains online. Apple explicitly distinguishes device storage from iCloud storage, and other providers have similar on-demand concepts.

Does ClearCopies support iCloud Drive?

No. ClearCopies currently supports OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox; this comparison does not imply an iCloud connector.

Moving files can create exact copies.

After a migration or repeated import, ClearCopies can scan a supported OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox account for byte-identical files using provider metadata. It does not compare providers or create cross-provider duplicate groups.
